The Cloud’s Portable Silkscreen Printshop is an extension of a series of summer printmaking workshops held at Cloud Place in 2006. Led by master printmaker Jesus Matheús, the silkscreen workshops introduce students to the principles of printmaking and graphic design via explorations of the history of textile design, political and fine art posters, and pop art. While mastering the technical skills required to create professional-quality print editions, students are encouraged to think critically about design and visual communication in their own lives. In creating their own designs for posters, t-shirts, and fine art prints students are given a chance to put their personalized messages, artwork, logos, and other images into mass production.
The
versatility of screenprinting and its expressive possibilities, the high quality
of printed images, and the collaborative nature of the printing process make
it an ideal medium to generate powerful graphic statements. Mentorship and
guidance from an educator who is also an internationally recognized artist
provide students with a model for professional artistic practice as well as
college-level critique and instruction. The final classes of the Silkscreen
Printshop will focus on professional presentation of completed prints, beginning
with group critique and continuing through the creation of portfolios of finished
prints and exhibition design.
